Pieter Brueghel, Carnival on the left and Lent on the right

So, you know how every year we harvest all this food in the fall, and every year we go, better not eat all this food all at once, it has to last until Spring? And then we have big feasts to celebrate: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentine’s Day… and then whoa, it’s only the middle of February and the food’s almost all gone!

That’s when we just go, oh the heck with it and eat up all the rest of the food in one big party (today we call it Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, and maybe it’s also related to Purim) and then tighten our belts and go hungry until Easter and Passover come and the first new food starts to grow in the spring.
