“We did soooooo many great things outside of the school building.” – Dan Lee

“Martha, a second grader in the second year, was a born hydraulics engineer. Her mom was a petite, aristocratic French woman who sent Martha to school every day in frilly crinolines with bows in her hair. In spring, almost every day, Martha came home from East Hill rather muddy. Near the end of the school year she decided to built the Aswan High Dam in miniature on the slope at the back of the parking lot. She started with just a piece of slate shingle to use as a bulldozer blade.
Over several days the reservoir at the top and the system of canals leading down the slope got deeper and more elaborate, and she built a staff of kids from all grades who operated sluice gates to vary the direction of the water. Sixth grade boys, including Wacky and Rogan, were drafted to carry 5 gallon buckets of water up to the reservoir to keep a constant flow.
Martha’s mom came to school at lunch time one day in June to see why Martha was coming home so muddy. When she saw Martha’s engineering prowess and that she was the BOSS of this operation her attitude changed. Martha was thereafter allowed to come to school in overalls.” – Bill Mutch

“I remember the story of my youngest brother Steve Halton and a buddy rolling a tire down the front lawn. It bounced into the street and crashed into Pat Holmes’s car! Oops!” – Kathleen Halton
“Both Dan Lee and I started architecture projects separately. It worked even better when we consolidated them and worked together. ” – Bill Mutch
“For the first Earth Day, we planted trees by the stairs down to Stewart Ave. They’re big now.” – Karen Carr
“It’s a very good thing that the kayak building project was never finished because it would have been a dangerously unstable boat.” – Bill Mutch
I remember the Kon Tiki we built to scale using only the same materials used on the original. We launched it on Cayuga Lake to discover the currents. It was highly educational and motivating, and my main memory of the curriculum.
